German Indians:
(Listen in RealAudio…)
The romanticism of Native Americans, their culture and traditions, by fictional western novels and Hollywood films sparked many people's interest in tribes. The "noble savage" phenomenon exploded in books and films and impacted people, not just in the U.S. but also as far away as Germany, where, today, there are organized clubs that portray life among tribes before 1840. Although the German fascination with Native people began earlier than Hollywood's stereotypical portrayals of Natives, it has lead to extravagant reenactments by thousands of club members. According to some members of the German Indian clubs, they are not just dressing up and playing Indian, they are paying tribute and honoring all Native people. Are they really honoring Natives or just exploiting Native culture and tradition? Guest includes Peter Grotte-Higley, former member of a German Indian club.
