On the the northwestern arm of the Crow Reservation, in Montana, the Cole family is missing a son. After his 2005 shooting was declined for prosecution on the grounds of self-defense, his mother Earline began to lead a fight against the federal agents and prosecutors the family believes allowed Steven's shooter to go free.
In this piece, produced by photojournalist Shane McMillan for the Montana Native News Project, the Cole's reveal their story of love, loss and their fight to clear Steven's name.
