Walking 3000 miles from Portland to New York to Deliver Freedom and Liberty of Burma

Freedom and Liberty of Burma

View Current Signatures   -   Sign the Petition

To:  United Nations

To: His Excellency Ban Ki-Moon
Secretary-General of the United Nations
New York, New York 10017

CC: Representatives of the United Nations Security Council

In 2007, monks and civilians took to Burma's streets demanding change, and were met with violence and intimidation. Thousands of monks have been arrested, tortured, or 'disappeared' by the ruling military junta. On August 8, 2008, China will celebrate the opening ceremony of the Beijing olympics - 20 years to the day that the Burmese military gunned down over 3,000 peaceful protesters in streets of Burma. As a symbol of peace and cooperation, it is ironic that the olympics will begin on such a tragic anniversary, when the people of Burma have had no chance to participate in the peaceful development enjoyed by China and other nations of the world.

An estimated 650,000 people have been displaced in Burma and 3,000 villages have been destroyed by the government. The military junta routinely commits human rights abuses such as forced labor, forced recruitment of child soldiers, land confiscations, and rape as a weapon of war. Ethnic minorities are targeted for assimilation and violence.

Burma has one of the world's largest militaries, but this force is only used against its own people. Still, Burma's neighbors continue to sell the SPDC weapons that perpetuate this violence, and continue to push development projects that will result in further human rights abuses. As the junta is preparing to consolidate its power through a new constitution and referendum that has been widely denounced by opposition groups, it is imperative that action be taken immediately to enact true democratic progress and national reconciliation in Burma.

We call on the SPDC to take the following steps:

1. Allow freedom of speech and respect the human rights of all Burma's citizens.
2. Release all political prisoners.
3. Cease fighting with ethnic minority groups along the border as well as all aggressive military activities in current ceasefire areas.
4. Transition to a civilian government and the democratically elected parties of the 1990 elections.

We urge the United Nations Security Council and all member countries of the United Nations to take the following steps to protect the people of Burma:

1. Impose a universal arms embargo on the Burmese military junta.
2. Impose sanctions on the financial transactions of Burma's ruling military elite.
3. Recognize the genocide being committed against Burma's ethnic minorities and take all necessary steps to save the lives of targeted civilians.
4. Hold the ruling military generals accountable for their crimes against humanity.

We are calling on the members of the United Nations to make peaceful political change and reconciliation in Burma a priority, and to take all necessary steps to protect the people of Burma from the oppression and violence of the military junta.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

FWD: What is a BILLION?

Every North American should read this...

The next time you hear a politician use the word "billion" in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the "politicians" spending YOUR tax money.  A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective.

 A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

 B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

 C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.

 D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

 E.  A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate
our government is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division
. .

Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans .  Interesting number, what does it mean?

 A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every
man, woman, child), you each get $516,528.

 B. Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home
gets $1,329,787.

 C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington , D.C .. HELLO!!! .. Are all your calculators broken??

Buffalohair THE CHINA SYNDROME, Tibet or Bust

THE CHINA SYNDROME, Tibet or Bust

Expeditiously and stealthfully China brought troops into Tibet to “quell” the disturbance with them pesky Buddhist Monks. All news from Lhasa, Tibet has been silenced or severely muffled by Chinese censors. Official Chinese reports claim 13 to 24 casualties by the hand of angry mobs while many protesters surrendering to authorities. But eye witnesses, photos and video smuggled out of country already tell of over 100 deaths by the hand of Chinese Security Forces since the March 10th Offensive began. Authorities have been conducting house to house searches for demonstrators and dissidents then arresting them. And China’s true nature was reveled, again. But it was not the nature of the people; it was the nature of the regime.

The West looked to China for leadership and positive solutions for Darfur and Burma’s plight. But China dashed any hopes for peaceful intervention by introducing their own particular brand of inhumanity. They killed and incarcerated their way into the hearts of Tibetan’s during the past week. Only after the news blockade is lifted will the totality of China’s insurgency be known to the rest of the world. At present, reports from within Tibet are grim at best as security forces clamp down on civil liberties and human rights. It is a very uneasy time for western journalist within Tibet’s borders. The eye of the junta is on them and their every move. Some journalists have been detained while others found contact with the outside world difficult if not impossible at times. Monks and students fare a much darker fate indeed.

China has turned a deaf ear to the cries of human beings for the sake of natural resources in both Darfur and Burma. Ethnic cleansing has become an art form for both the Sudanese and Burmese military governments. Rape and murder as well as systematic genocide are their calling card. It is beyond obvious that China is their financier and silent partner. China has gleaned a handsome profit from their investment in death. With the prize of gas, oil, gold, emeralds, uranium, produce plus a myriad of textiles and other natural resources. Sudan and Burma are cash cows for the Corporate Communist Empire of China and it’s all about the money.

The Olympic Games and the very location of the arenas are drenched with human suffering and murder since 1.5 million people were displaced with no compensation. Some lost their lives in the process. Don’t you find it odd the U.S. Olympic Players will not be allowed to eat Chinese food or drink their water? But the general public in the U.S. must eat Chinese food; buy Chinese cloths and products in spite of all the recalls. How many infants’ toys need to be recalled before we figure it out? Gads, the children’s toy that produced the “date rape” drug when mixed with saliva was the one that really got my attention. How could that be an accident? The Olympics should be called the Corporate Games since it’s all about corporation’s world wide and not the nations that used to take precedent. Humanity and the “spirit of fair play” have disappeared for the sake of corporate profits at the expense of the voiceless villagers.

The Olympic Torch burns bright for China and there is good reason fore it is fueled from the rendered oil of human suffering.

2 COURAGEOUS STUDENTS WALK 3000 MILES FROM PORTLAND, TO NEW YORK, NY FOR FREEDOM OF BURMA

6 MONTHS JOURNEY ACROSS 3000 MILES FROM PORTLAND, OR TO NEW YORK, NY. THIS IS A GROUP TO SUPPORT THE 2 COURAGEOUS STUDENTS ATHEIN & ZAW HOLDING AN AMERICAN FLAG AND THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF DEMOCRACY FLAG WALKING ACROSS UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FOR THE FREEDOM OF BURMA....

On March, 2008, Athein stepped out from Portland, OR on a journey to New York, to raise awareness about the crisis in Burma. He'll walk over 3,000 miles to present a petition to the UN on August 8, 2008, the 20th anniversary of the 8-8-88 protests in Burma.

***A MESSAGE FROM ATHEIN***

It was for so many reasons that I left my regiment and my friends, but this does not mean that I ran away from my country. I have always wanted to do something for my country, but I don't know what the right way is for me to do this. Before, I believed we needed international help for Burma, but I haven't seen any help from the world. There are only two choices left for every life in Burma, become a fugitive and rebel against their law, or obey their rules and stay with their ruling one-power government.

I already donated my life for my country, and now I have decided to do something that nobody else would do. Maybe someone has already done this, maybe this is the first time, but I am not crazy and I am going to do this until my job is done. I have decided to march to New York from my city.

I live in Portland, Oregon, about 2,500 miles east of New York by plane. Walking this journey will be at least 3,000 miles. It won't be easy to get there like sitting on a plane is, I know and understand that I will be walking for more than six months, and I don't know what I will have to face on my journey.

-Athein

Tomorrow they will keep walking to Wallula city but between Biggs Junction and Wallula city they will have to sleep on the road because between these two city there 45 miles far way . They expected more than 25 miles tomorrow. Athein had a problem with his knee yesterday by walking so their marching slowed down yesterday afternoon, they will rest one day before they leave Hood river .
