WASHINGTON — The opening of the $219 million National Museum of the American Indian in Washington on April 22 brought 20,000 Native Americans to the nation’s capital. Among them were Navajo Nation officials who also attended several meetings and a national health care conference hosted by the Indian Health Service.

NMAI spokesman Thomas Sweeny said there were more than 8,000 artifacts and artworks on display in the 250,000 square-foot museum. He explained that the museum’s 800,000 objects are mostly from the collection of wealthy financier George Gustav Heye who before passing away in 1957, built his own Indian museum in New York City that eventually was turned over to the Smithsonian.
